Meet Dr. Alyssa Dweck, Uqora Medical Advisor

Dr. Alyssa Dweck offers an important viewpoint to the Uqora medical advisory board with her gynecology specialization and passion for women's health.

Here, get to know more about her approach to urinary and vaginal health:

Tell us about yourself. Why did you decide to pursue obstetrics & gynecology? What do you like most about it?

I was drawn in instantly to ob/gyn by the excitement, drama and hustle and bustle of this multifaceted field. Once I experienced the thrill of delivering babies and performing surgery I was hooked and knew this field was the right fit for me. Also, as a woman, I felt, It would be natural and easy to relate to my patients’ experiences and concerns. One unique and really rewarding aspect is providing care to women and then their daughters who I delivered!

Sexual health and general health go hand in hand; optimizing urinary tract health has always been vital for my gynecologic patients.

Explain a bit about your day-to-day. Who are the type of patients that you see and what are the common issues you see?

I see patients of all ages and naturally my practice demographic ages with me. My day to day varies considerably and is a healthy mix of routine well woman exams, office visits for issues around menstrual health, infections including UTIs, contraceptive issues, hormonal issues including menopause. I spend several days a month doing procedures both in-office and the operating room.

Do you have a specific area of research or focus as an OB/GYN?

I have special interest and expertise in women’s sexual health. Common sexual health issues (like pain during sex, vaginal dryness, low libido, and orgasm concerns) are common concerns. I’m often the second or third stop for women after they become frustrated with more general suggestions like using lube or trying to relax during intimacy with a glass of wine. I like to take a deeper dive.

You also have focus on perimenopause and menopause. Can you explain what the difference is?

Menopause by definition is 12 consecutive months without menstruation for no other reason. Ovulation is no longer occurring and estrogen levels plummet. The average age of menopause is 52. Perimenopause is the 4-8 years leading up to menopause when hormone levels are volatile. Perimenopause is marked by irregular menses, hot flashes and night sweats and irritability, in addition to a litany of other symptoms for many. Hormone changes of menopause, specifically low estrogen, can lead to vaginal dryness and urinary tract changes like urgency, frequency and even leakage and a propensity towards UTI. This often takes women by surprise. I take a proactive approach with my patients to optimize vaginal health and wellness including the vaginal microbiome.

Why do you recommend Uqora to your patients?

Many of my patients who suffer with recurrent and chronic UTI may find Uqora to be beneficial. I often recommend Uqora to my patients that want an alternative to post coital antibiotics. They want to be proactive and I support that.

What do your weekends look like? What do you like to do for fun?

I’m a runner. It keeps me mentally sane and physically fit. Luckily it’s getting warm here in the New York area so I can enjoy running outside.
