Here’s what you need to know about Seed Cycling

Have you heard of seed cycling? It’s picking up steam in the holistic blogosphere. While we’re not yet convinced, we are intrigued.

What is seed cycling?

Seed cycling is centered around the concept that our bodies need different nutrients throughout different times of our menstrual cycle. With seed cycling, you grind up and consume seeds (different depending on where you are in your cycle) daily to supplement what your body needs at any given time.

What are the benefits?

Seed cycling aims to provide your body with what it needs at different points in your cycle, helping your endocrine system to find some more balance. The idea is that seed cycling can help with mood, PMS, energy, or even fertility.

Each seed has its own qualities and functions that should support your hormones. In theory, the seeds you consume during seeding are high in Essential Fatty Acids and also contain lignin—supports theorize that lignin can bind and escort excessive estrogen from the body.

Alternative methods for preventing and managing chronic UTIs are emerging.

Where do I start if I’d like to get in on the action?

If you have a regular 28-day cycle you will want to consume one set of seeds during the follicular phase of your cycle (the first half), and a second set of seeds during the luteal phase (the second half.) For the follicular phase of your cycle, most people recommend flax and pumpkin seeds. During the second phase, people recommend sunflower seeds, which are high in selenium, said to help with hormonal balance.
